Patients’ lives are affected by the samples we receive, test and report. We must respect and protect the confidentiality of all patient protected health information (PHI) that we receive or view. All employees are specifically informed of their responsibility to maintain patient confidentiality, to protect patient data and of the penalty for violation of this trust. All employees shall sign a Confidentiality Agreement.
Employees will only release patient information upon receipt of proper authorization and will comply with the patient privacy and security protections as set forth in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). A patient who calls Carolina Medical Lab directly for test results should be referred to his or her ordering physician.
Signed into law in 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) establishes national standards to protect patients’ personal and medical records.
